Re-ridging the iconic Globe Theatre

I was lucky enough to be a part of the team which re-ridged and partially re-thatched the iconic replica of the Globe Theatre in London.

The current Globe Theatre is a faithful reconstruction of the original, which was built in 1599 and famously associated with William Shakespeare’s plays. The replica theatre was built in 1997 and is located in the same spot as the original, just a short distance from its site on the banks of the River Thames.

In 2008, work was undertaken by a team of 10 to repair and re-thatch the building, using over 800 bundles of sedge. The theatre remained open to the public throughout, allowing visitors to glimpse the ancient art of thatching in progress.

I was selected to be part of the team working on this project, and thoroughly enjoyed my time working on such a famous building – it’s an experience I certainly won’t forget!
