Re-Ridging

The ridge of thatched roof plays a crucial role in protecting the roof from the elements by creating a waterproof seal at the apex of the roof. The thatched material on either side of the ridge overlaps and is tightly compacted, preventing rainwater from entering the roof structure. Without a ridge, rainwater would be able to seep into the roof space, potentially causing rot and other damage to the roof structure. A well-constructed ridge is essential for the longevity and stability of a thatched roof. Even the best constructed ridge will degrade over time, and is likely to need replacing every 10 – 15 years or so.

Thatched ridges can be constructed in a number of styles to suit your project. I specialise in both elegant flush ridges and ornamental block ridgework – read more about each below, or get in touch for a no obligation quote!

    Ornamental Block Ridge

A block ridge is lifted from the main surface of the thatch by around four inches. They can be straight cut, but are more often formed into decorative shapes which can offer a distinctive finishing touch for your roof, and ensure it stands out from the crowd.

    Flush Ridge

Unlike a block ridge, and as the name suggests, a flush ridge joins seamlessly with the thatch of the roof. This simple and minimalist style of ridge and help to create an elegant and contemporary look to your thatched roof.
